California Bicycle Law

California state law gives bicyclists the same right of way as motorists on the road. Cyclists are not allowed to ride on the sidewalks unless it is too dangerous or difficult to ride in the street, which means that motorists are required to be on the alert for bicyclists and to treat them the same way they would another motorist.

• Bicyclists must travel on the right side of the roadway in the direction of traffic.
• Gas-powered bicycles and high-speed electric bicycles may not be used on bike paths.

• Bicyclists and passengers under the age of 18 must wear a helmet when riding on a bicycle.
• Unlike motorists, cyclists are permitted to use a handheld cell phone while riding.
